Doom, the Rougelike

  So I finally got around to doing a run, took me two tries to do this particular badge (was going for Eagerness Gold to get badges to get my rank up, but ended up getting Platinum as well). Usually i'd go for 100% kills but I got bored at the end and just decided to run through the levels to go and do stuff on Mabi.

  I did a couple runs on easymode and didn't even win. Kinda my fault because I never think about what I'm doing and just rush into everything. That difficulty isn't even unlocked for me yet. Or maybe it was on the last run, I dunno. I'll try to get a 100% run in at some point.
  
  The game seems pretty easy to understand and get into though... there's not really a lot to it. Everything is very clearly defined.

  That's the beauty of it. You can jump straight into it and get a good feel for it. It's more complicated then something such as "press x to win", but not overly so, and to get better you have to start using strategy and getting a feel for game mechanics, especially on the higher difficulties and challenge modes.
  
  I struggled a lot with that challenge (Angel of Impatience) because you couldn't hoard consumables to use in a tight spot. o.x

Weapons seem to be static, items always do the same thing and seem to only have one purpose of usage, nothing really seems to be "hidden", etc. It's all just laid out for you and focuses on being a game rather than being deep or lengthy. Of course I'm holding it against different standards than some other games because of its genre. It's kinda fun. I do like the other side too though.
  
  Haven't done a run since I posted that. Rockets are very obviously quite powerful, but the limited ammo seems to be a little bit of a problem. Getting hit by the splash damage sometimes isn't really a very big negative at all considering how good it is. Shotguns in general (all of them) seem to be pretty good. They might need constant reloading, but they hit very hard and I think the ability to push things around in particular is invaluable. They're not quite as good as rockets but considering they basically have unlimited ammo, I don't think they're a bad main.
  
  I've been trying pistols and they're underwhelming. Even fully modded with dual wielding, they don't seem to be so good... :l Kinda disappointed in that. I've never found a time where I felt I would be better off with them than other weapons, but maybe it's because I've only run into the starting pistols. Chaingun seems to be nice, but I think I prefer the knockback and spread of shotguns a little more. Maybe if I was against one enemy with a lot of health, I would use one. Current battle plan for the next time I get a run in is to get a double barrel shotgun and blast shit. Rockets as a backup when swarmed. I might pick up better guns as I find them. I haven't even seriously considered knives or the chainsaw, but the idea of having to run up to everything sounds too dangerous. I can't afford to eat pointless, avoidable shots like that...

  I haven't played any other rougelikes apart from BerserkRL, but DoomRL isn't supposed to be that deep, as I said in my post. It was developed as a "coffeebreak rougelike" to begin with.

  Have you gotten to the Cyberdemon yet? You'll chew ammo on him if you don't have the Army of the Dead trait, especially with a double shotgun.

  It's possible - but difficult - to do the game damageless with melee. I just finished completing the unholy cathedral level damageless.
  
  As for melee, it's probably the most overpowered build in the game barring a Nanomanufacture Rocket Launcher (Rocket launcher without ammo - you can fire it indefinitely). The best melee weapon is 9d9 and constantly leaves you berserk, which doubles your melee damage and gives you a 60% speed boost to all actions and 60% resistance to all sources of damage...

At that point I pretty much lost all hope because I knew my build was screwed. Kept playing anyway. I probably could've won this fight if I remembered to use that teleporter. I should've brought spare armor. If I got just a few more shots in I would've killed it. I swear, it was seriously wounded and just about to die.
  
  I think I might pick up the plasma rifle (as a third weapon) for better cell efficiency, and to take out the Cyberdemon. It really lives forever and hits quite hard.
  
  The part that [I]really ruined my run is the skull map. I was not prepared to have literally dozens of enemies on me the second I pulled the lever. Holy shit. That ate almost all of my medpacks and caused a ton of splash damage pain. And killed both my red armor and a blue backup I had in my inventory. I'll be way safer about how I approach it now. I blew up the backpack in one of the dumbest rockets I've ever shot, btw. I also need to remember alt fire and reloads exist.

  Well done! You're making better progress then I did. It took me WAY more then 16 games to get to the cyberdemon >>;
  
  Here's a few tips from my playing:
  
  -Army of the Dead trait is good, but it'l only get you so far unless you're really careful with your dodges. All it does is reduce armor count to 0 for all monsters - which is a big deal on bosses like the cyberdemon, but I would honestly prefer a masterless build to that.
  -Try to stick to one or two weapons - without Eagle Eye you won't be hitting anything for a really good amount of damage with that plasma rifle. I usually bring a rocket launcher to deal with packs of enemies or the wall and then main my regular weapon.
  -The cyberdemon purposefully has a predictable AI - in earlier versions of the game he was the final boss, so he IS hard. He uses the same rocket launcher as a player does (6d6, one shot then reload), and has to pause to reload it - take advantage of this fact. Don't get too close though - his melee attack is 1d3+15.
  -Agility mods. They don't work on shotguns as shotguns have perfect accuracy (unless you were going for an advanced assembly). You also had 2 spare in your inventory - using 2 agility mods on a pair of steel boots gives you a regenerating pair of boots that gives you +15% to move speed. This is always my first priority.
  
  
  About the special levels - You didn't just blow up the backpack unfortunately, you blew up the Missile Launcher as well. If you haven't found it before it's a rocket launcher with an extended clip (4 shots before reloading), nearly perfect accuracy (+10 compared to the plasma rifle's +2) and faster firing/reloading times. That probably would have helped you a great deal about the cyberdemon.
  
  As for the city of skulls, I died a swift death too when I pulled that lever the first time. Such a cruel trick >_<
  
  Anyway, hope I helped. I did another run last night to quickly finish off the last gold badge needed to finish my promotion, now I need to get another diamond badge to rank up again. It was a full win, so there are some minor spoilers. I was playing Angel of Berserk - so ignore the rocket launcher, I was trying to find a second technical mod to finish some assemblies Also ignore the point in Ironman - I got that off the cyberdemon and was too busy spamming enter to notice that I levelled up. (I also got bored again after the unholy cathedral and decided to run through levels killing only what I needed to kill):
